Ampyx Power
At higher altitudes there is sufficient wind to power the world’s growing renewable energy demand. Ampyx Power is developing utility scale Airborne Wind Energy Systems (AWES) with tethered wings that convert stronger winds above 200 meters into electricity. With our compact systems we avoid the use of heavy towers and foundations, making it a cost-effective and environmentally friendly solution for the production of wind energy.
Utility Scale Airborn Wind Energy
Ampyx Power’s first commercial product features 150 m2 wings and can be combined with a range of generators, depending on the application:
- Offshore ‘repowering’, replacing old turbines and reusing electrical infrastructure and existing foundations. This is done to extend the life of aging wind farms.
- Onshore deployment will be competitive in areas where unique selling points stand out. Due to reduced weight and compact size, transportation and installation is feasible in mountainous, remote areas and islands
Capable of harvesting higher stronger winds makes AWES the cost-effective solution for wind power generation on sites further inland with strong wind shear effects (wind speed increases with altitude).
Offshore Floating Airborn Wind Energy
Designs with 200-250 m2 wings, coupled to larger generators allows scaling to 5 MW enabling floating offshore at highly competitive cost levels.
- Combined with a 3 MW generator this design will be able to produce about 20% more energy annually than previous generation design at a 10% lower cost, making it an altogether more profitable product.
- Coupled to a 5 MW generator, this design unlocks the market for floating offshore wind energy at a highly competitive Levelized Cost of Energy (LCoE).
